New MSc in Brewing and Distilling Set to Drive Growth in Ireland’s Drinks Industry
TU Dublin has announced the launch of Ireland’s first Master of Science (MSc) in Brewing and Distilling, a programme designed to meet the rising demand for skilled professionals in one of the country’s fastest-growing industries.
The launch has been warmly welcomed by the Irish Whiskey Association, which praised the University’s initiative in supporting the next generation of distillers and brewers.
The Irish Whiskey sector has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past 15 years. From just four working distilleries in 2010 to over 50 today, the industry’s expansion has created thousands of jobs and positioned Irish whiskey as a global success story. But with growth comes new challenges – namely, a shortage of skilled professionals ready to meet the needs of a thriving industry.
Speaking at the launch event, Eoin Ó Catháin, Director of the Irish Whiskey Association, commended TU Dublin for leading the way in education and innovation:
“I am heartened to see the enthusiasm and goodwill for Ireland’s Brewing and Distilling sectors at this launch event this evening. The Brewing and Distilling sector employs 10,000 people in Ireland and supports so many more. This course serves as an endorsement for our sector, and I hope that many students can pass through the doors of this University into well-paid and secure jobs in Ireland’s most innovative and exciting breweries and distilleries.”

The new MSc is the first of its kind at postgraduate level in Ireland and complements existing programmes across the country. It joins a growing suite of educational offerings supported by the Irish Whiskey Association, which has been working closely with higher education institutions including TU Dublin to provide scholarships and micro-credentials aimed at upskilling workers in the industry.
Flexible Learning Pathways
In addition to the MSc, TU Dublin offers flexible learning opportunities through its part-time Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Brewing and Distilling, ideal for working professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge or take the next step in their careers.
